MEDFORD, Mass. -- No.2 Tufts University improved the 3-0 on the young season with a 76-45 women's basketball result against the University of New England on Monday night (Nov. 18) at Cousens Gymnasium.
Erica DeCandido led the Jumbos with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor, and corralled six boards. Sofia Rosa had 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds off the bench, while Emily Briggs contributed 11 points. Erin Poindexter McHan added 10 points.
The hosts shot 44 percent in the match and out-rebounded the Nor'easters by a 47-33 margin. Tufts also forced 25 turnovers and held the visitors to less than 30 percent field-goal accuracy.
For UNE (3-1),
Abby Cavallaro canned four from downtown to end with 14 points, and secured five steals.
Sadie Nelson and
Jocelyn Chaput combined for 15 points and 13 rebounds.
The teams exchanged early three-pointers before DeCandido scored six in-a-row to put Tufts up for good (9-3). Another trey got the Nor'easters back within three, but a 14-1 run moved the Jumbos towards a 23-9 advantage through 10 minutes. The gap was 38-17 at the half, and 59-34 after three quarters.
UNE is back in action Wednesday at Saint Joseph's College (Maine).
