BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Dean College connected on 52 percent of its field goals after halftime to hold off the University of New England men's basketball team for a 98-83 decision on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 10) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Bulldogs (2-0) limited the Nor'easters (0-1) to just 32 percent accuracy following the break to build upon a four-point (53-49) edge at the intermission.
Josh Croskey topped Dean with a double-double of 25 points and 16 rebounds, while Traijan Powell went for 23 and nine. Kevin Clark tossed in 17 points and picked up four steals, and D'caran Anderson added 14 points. Jordan Booker scored 11 and dished out five assists.
UNE was paced by rookie
Siddiq Canty, who totaled 15 points, seven boards, five assists, and five steals.
Alex Kravchuk contributed 14 points. Both
Avery DeBrito and
Jesse Matthews tallied 11 points; DeBrito also had six assists and Matthews grabbed seven rebounds with two blocks.
The visitors never trailed in the contest, and constructed a 23-9 cushion early on behind a 12-2 run that included a pair of treys by Powell. The Nor'easters put together a 14-6 stretch late in the opening period to get back within four.
In the 2nd, Anderson hit a couple from long range to spark a 10-3 spurt that established a 70-57 advantage, and a quick five from Powell moments later peaked the lead at 15 (75-60) with 11:04 to go. UNE countered with 10 unanswered -- featuring more than half of the nine total points by
Ray Evans -- but seven in-a-row the other way gave the Bulldogs the separation they needed. The hosts could get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
The Nor'easters get back at it on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) with a home game against the University of Southern Maine.
