Curry holds off Nor’easter comeback, 34-31

MILTON, Mass. – Entering the fourth quarter with an 18-point deficit, the University of New England pulled within three but ultimately was defeated by Curry 34-31 in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Football action on Saturday afternoon at Katz Field.
 
Trailing 27-9 with 3:27 to play in the third. Brian Peters quickly completed passes of 30-yards to Jack Mahoney and 25-yards to Mikey Brennan to put the Nor'easters at the Curry 6. Two plays later Devon Charles rushed in to close the gap. Following the kickoff, Levy took the ball in from 63 yards out, his second 50-plus-yard touchdown of the day to give the Colonials a 34-16 lead.
 
UNE used the final minutes of the third to drive deep into Curry territory and Peters hit Ryan Gaboury for an 11-yard TD on the first play of the fourth to pull the Nor'easter within two scores.
 
After a three-and-out by Curry, Peters and Cam Mann connected for a 41-yard pass to setup another UNE scoring drive. Gaboury caught a two-yard touchdown pass and the two-point conversion as the Curry lead was trimmed to 34-31.
 
The Nor'easters moved the ball well on their next drive, getting down to the Colonel's 16 before an interception by Joshua Gabbidon ended the threat with 6:07 to play. Curry was able to use much clock, but was forced to punt with 2:40 to play. Gabriel DeSouza's kick pinned the Nor'easters at the Colonel's 6 yard line. UNE was able to get into Curry territory before a sack by Hunter Atwood ended the game.
 
The teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter. Levy ran in from 18-yards out to give Curry an early lead. Peters hit Brennan for a 39-yard touchdown on the Nor'easters' ensuing drive to knot the game 7-7 after 15 minutes.
 
Curry scored another touchdown to begin the second as Nick Villanueva hauled in a 5-yard pass from Nick Juvelier. Alex Huff was able to block the extra point and Joe Curit returned it to the house for two points, trimming the deficit to 13-9. Both team's offenses stalled the rest of the half as the score remained into the break.
 
UNE outgained Curry 512-477, but 216 rushing yards by Levy and two turnovers proved to be the difference.
 
Peters topped his career-best with 444 yards and three scores through the air. Gaboury had 10 catches for 108 yards and two TDs. Cobey Johnson and Brennan each had 89 receiving yards.
 
Juvelier threw for 224 yards and two TDs, both to Villanueva who finished with 10 receptions for 125 yards.
 
Defensively, DJ James led UNE with eight tackles (seven solo). Will Peters, Adam Thornton, and Chris Caputo each had a sack. Elvin Febus led the Curry defense with nine solo tackles.
 
UNE takes a week off before its next game on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Husson at 1 p.m.
