Sadie Nelson poured in 27 points to lead the University of New England in an 83-58 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball victory over Gordon College on Thursday evening (Jan. 3) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Nor'easters (5-6) are off to a 3-0 start in league action for a seventh consecutive year, and have now defeated the Fighting Scots (4-9, 1-3 CCC) in 24 straight meetings.
Nelson's scoring output matched a career high, and was 10 more than her previous best this season. She hit five treys and hit all six free throws, while sharing the team-lead of five rebounds.
Jocelyn Chaput added 12 points, five boards, and four steals for UNE.
Madalyn Sanborn went for 12 points and five rebounds, as well.
Elyssa Nicholas tossed in 10 for the hosts, who tallied 26 second-chance points behind 21 offensive caroms.
The Nor'easters scored the first eight points and established a double-digit cushion for good (14-4) just past the midway mark of the 1st quarter, which ended at 20-6. The spread reached 18 at the half (42-24), as Gordon was significantly hampered by 23 turnovers (14 UNE steals) during the initial 20 minutes. The margin topped-out at 32 in the 4th period.
For the visitors, Meghan Foley bounced back from a scoreless opening frame to total 28 points. The junior's 23rd in the final stanza made for career number 1,000. She also notched seven rebounds and six assists.
The Fighting Scots got an additional 13 points and eight boards out of Sarah Gibbs, and 12 points from Jess Wall.Â
UNE will travel to Western New England University (3-1 CCC) on Saturday.
