WORCESTER, Mass. –
Brett Mecrones and
Brady Fleurent each scored twice as the No.12 University of New England men's hockey team defeated Becker College, 8-2, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action on Friday night.
The Nor'easters (12-4-1, 6-3-0 CCC) scored three times in the opening 6:42 of the first period and never looked back. Mecrones got things started 3:03 into the evening, before
Tyler Seltenreich and Fleurent padded the cushion. The Hawks (2-14-1, 1-7-1 CCC) got on the board with an Austin Siering goal at the 7:35 mark, sending the game into intermission at 3-1 in favor of the visitors.
Fleurent added a short-handed tally for the lone goal of the second. UNE continues to lead the nation 11 tallies on the penalty-kill.
After a Becker power-play goal by Corey Schafer made it 4-2 five minutes into the third, UNE's power-play cashed in four times over the final 4:01 to produce the final margin. Reigning CCC Player of the Week
Ryan Bloom struck before the hosts took a major penalty, and Mecrones,
Ryan Burr, and
Tucker Ross finished things off.
Liam Darcy totaled three assists for the offense. Bloom added a helper for two points, which was also posted by
Dimitris Jones and
Brendan Donohue. Fifteen of the 19 players in uniform factored in the scoring.
Following a three-game skid, the Nor'easters are 5-0-1 since.
Ben Churchfield made 19 saves to earn the win for the Nor'easters, who out-shot the Hawks by a 69-21 spread. Cody Foster stopped 61 shots for Becker.
The two teams will skate on the Harold Alfond Forum ice tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
