BIDDEFORD, Maine – Thomas College twice had a two-goal cushion cut in half, but managed to escape the University of New England with a 3-2 men's soccer victory on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 8) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
After a Kyle Patterson goal in the 9th minute opened the scoring for the Terriers (3-1), Josh Morrissey doubled the margin with a header goal off a service by Jahzardae Samuels in the 41st minute.
Less than a minute later, though, the Nor'easters (1-2) bounced back as
Lee Esposito finished a low cross by
Cody Kennedy from the right corner.
Samuels restored the advantage in the 64th minute. Zenawi Bowen blasted a shot from the top off the right post, and Samuels stepped into the box to deposit the rebound.
UNE answered in the 72nd minute off the right foot of
Cam Twombly, who received a pass from
Matt Ferguson on the right edge of the box and lofted a shot into the far side-netting.
Both goalkeepers -- Jonathan Dutka of Thomas and
Will Shearon of UNE -- recorded a pair of saves. The Terriers had a decided advantage in shot attempts at 22-10, but very few found the target.
The Nor'easters continue their three-match homestand on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) against Bates College.
