MacDonald powers sixth straight win as UNE tops Salve, 2-1

MIDDLETOWN, R.I. -- Kendra MacDonald pulled the University of New England out of an early deficit with two 1st-half goals as the Nor'easters picked up a 2-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey victory over Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon (Sep. 29) at Gaudet Field.

After the Seahawks scored on the game's first shot by Ashley Cody at the 1:22 mark, MacDonald tied things up in the 12th minute. In the 23rd minute, she netted her team-leading seventh goal of the season to put the visitors in front.

UNE's Liz Sargent made eight of her 10 saves during the opening frame, when SRU totaled an 11-9 edge in shot attempts and had an 11-2 advantage in penalty corners.

The Nor'easters, who dropped their first four contests of the year, now stand at 6-4 overall and 5-0 in conference action. Big Blue has won the last seven against the Seahawks (3-7, 1-5 CCC).

In a scoreless 2nd period, UNE amassed a 13-4 cushion in shots and tried three more corners (7-4). Defending the cage for Salve Regina, Ally Daly recorded 12 saves.

The Nor'easters get right back to work on Sunday (12 p.m.) with a visit to No.18 Trinity College (Conn.).
