BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Leah Rogoz and Claire Quick combined for 33 kills to lead Wentworth Institute of Technology back for a 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-19) over the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's volleyball action Tuesday night (Sep. 25) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Leopards (11-2, 2-0 CCC) jumped out to an early advantage in the set they eventually dropped, turning a 5-0 start into a 12-5 cushion. The Nor'easters (4-9, 1-2 CCC) notched eight of the next nine, however, to even things up at 13-all. Seven ties later it was 22 apiece, and UNE sandwiched a WIT error between a kill from
Katie Flynn and an ace by
Paige Simoneau to take the frame.
Wentworth never trailed in the 2nd, breaking away from a 13-11 game with four unanswered on the way to leveling the match. It was 10-8 in favor of the visitors in the 3rd, before the Leopards constructed 15-6 stretch to grab the edge in sets.
WIT overcame a 4-2 deficit in the 4th with six in-a-row to get in front for good. The separation reached six at 15-9, only to see UNE trim things down to one on a couple occasions (18-17, 20-19). But Wentworth claimed the ensuing five points -- capped by the 17th kill from Rogoz -- to seal the deal.
Rogoz and Quick both notched double digits in digs with 18 and 12, respectively. The Leopards were led on the back line by Lexie Cambray with 27 digs, and 12 more came from Katie Clouse, who also recorded 24 assists and three aces. Maddy Tomastik chipped in with 21 assists.
For the Nor'easters,
Rene Roggenbuck had 12 kills and shared in six blocks. Flynn added 11 winners for the attack, which was guided by
Sydney Christiansen and her 33 assists. Defensively,
Katie Marsh and
Molly Camelo each totaled 19 digs, Christiansen tallied 18, and Simoneau contributed 13.
UNE will spend the next two weeks away from home, starting with a visit to Rivier University on Thursday (7 p.m.).
