BRISTOL, R.I. -- The University of New England secured a 4-3 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey result against Roger Williams University on Wednesday afternoon (Sep. 19) at Bayside Field.
Winners of three in-a-row, the Nor'easters (3-4, 2-0 CCC) have now taken each of the 12 all-time meetings between the squads.
UNE never trailed in the contest, but the teams exchanged four goals in a span of seven minutes during the initial portion of the 1st half to keep things interesting.
Kendra MacDonald and
Bailey Lynch worked a give-and-go down the right side the first goal in the 11th minute, which was answered by RWU's Sydney McCarthy just 60 seconds later.
Brooke Lemerise put the visitors back up by finishing a drive off the stick of
Kersey Boulay in the 14th minute, only to see Brooklyn Cenatiempo knot the score (2-2) in the 18th minute.
With 2:30 left before the midway break,
Jillian Lachapelle batted home a redirection at the right post to give the Nor'easters the lead for good (3-2).
Boulay cashed in on a feed from
Marge Gardiner in the 42nd minute for what proved to be the difference, netting her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
Anna Vasaturo, who assisted on the Hawks' second tally, put in one of her own with just under four minutes remaining to trim the deficit in half, but the hosts could not get another shot the rest of the way.
For UNE -- which had a 15-11 advantage in total shots --
Liz Sargent made two saves. Her counterpart from Roger Williams (3-4, 0-2 CCC), Callie Flanagan, recorded six stops.
The Nor'easters are slated to visit Nichols College on Friday (4 p.m.) for another league date.
