WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Two goals apiece from
Brooke Lemerise and
Sydney Liptak helped lead the University of New England in a 6-1 field hockey victory over Wellesley College on Sunday afternoon (Sep. 16) at the Wellesley Fields Complex.
The Nor'easters (2-4) pocketed three in each half and built a 5-0 cushion through 39 minutes.
After falling to the Blue (3-3) in the 2015 NCAA Championship, UNE has taken the last two meetings by a combined 12-1 margin.
Liptak nearly doubled her career point total with five in the contest, while Lemerise matched her personal-best in scoring. After
Kendra MacDonald got things going in the 10th minute, Lemerise (12th), Liptak (23rd), Lemerise (36th), and Liptak (39th) pushed the advantage forward. MacDonald and
Marge Gardiner tallied assists along the way.
Wellesley put one on the scoreboard in the 50th minute off the stick of Haley Chrobock, before
Kersey Boulay finished a penalty corner insert from Liptak to restore the five-goal spread for the visitors in the 68th minute.
Liz Sargent made five stops for the Nor'easters, who registered a 19-9 edge in shot attempts. On the other side, Maggie Connelly and Janelle Sullivan combined to make seven saves for the hosts.
UNE resumes Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Tuesday (4 p.m.) at Roger Williams University.
