BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Molly Camelo and
Katie Flynn each recorded a double-double of kills and digs as the University of New England women's volleyball squad overcame an early deficit for a 3-1 triumph (23-25, 25-22, 26-24, 25-20) versus Colby College on Tuesday night (Sep. 11) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Nor'easters (2-7) end a seven-match skid with the result, while the Mules dip below .500 to 2-3 on the year.
Camelo and Flynn went for 13 and 12 winners, respectively, and both pulled up 15 digs.
Rene Roggenbuck added nine kills and factored in five blocks, and
Sydney Christiansen totaled eight kills, three service aces, 33 assists, and 10 digs.
Katie Marsh also tossed in three aces to go with a match-high 22 digs, and
Paige Simoneau contributed 11 digs.
For the visitors, Paige Hanssen racked up 24 kills and 28 points, along with 18 digs. Elizabeth Middlebrook and Nicole Petherbridge registered nine kills apiece; Middlebrook also had 15 digs on the back line, right next to the 16 from Julia Hutchings. Guiding the attack for Colby was Molly Manuel with 29 assists and Katie Devine with 15 more.
The contest featured 40 ties and 21 lead-changes, with a spread of no more than four either way until the deciding moments of the evening. After the Mules took nine of the final 14 points to claim the 1st set, UNE captured the last five of the 2nd to even things up. The teams traded 7-1 (UNE) and 6-1 (Colby) runs in the latter stages of the 3rd, before the Nor'easters escaped set-point against with two kills and an ace to move in front.
Colby was up by as many as four (11-7) in the 4th, and still led at 18-16, only to see the hosts close with a 9-2 spurt that included five winners.
UNE remains at home to welcome in Elms College on Saturday (1 p.m.).
