STANDISH, Maine
– Saint Joseph's College of Maine used a second-half goal by Haley DaGraca to defeat the University of New England women's soccer team, 1-0, in the season-opener on Friday night at the SJC Athletics Complex.
The matchup featured mostly midfield play for the better part of the evening, but in the 56th minute DaGraca found space down the left side of the field and scored the game's only goal. McKenzie Murphy and Brenna Smith were both credited with assists on the strike.
The Nor'easters held a 16-10 advantage in overall shots, but were outshot 5-4 on goal. UNE had two chances on net in each half.
Katie Beaudoin and
Vanessa Hodge each led the way with four attempts on the night.
Goalkeeper
Emily Ashman made four saves for the Nor'easters.
UNE will open its home schedule on Sunday afternoon against Wheaton College (Mass.). Game time at Barbara J. Hazard Field is set for 1 p.m.
