Colby Obrecht scored in the 59th minute to lift the University of New England to a season-opening 1-0 victory over Maine Maritime Academy in men's soccer action on Friday night at Barbara J. Hazard Field.

Cody Kennedy was punched out by Mariners' keeper Joshua Reeks, but found the foot of Obrecht who launched a rocket from the top of the box for the lone score.

Each team had chances early on as shots on goal were square a 3-3 at halftime. UNE had two early shots in the first three minutes of play. Maine Maritime looked to have a goal in the 26th minute as the ball was rolling towards an open net until a Nor'easter defender cleared it away to keep the game scoreless.
UNE out-shot the Mariners 15-11 overall and 8-5 on goal. Goalkeepers

The Nor'easters return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 4 on the road at Bowdoin. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
