BRISTOL, R.I. -- Roger Williams University broke away from more than 22 minutes of a tied game with five unanswered goals in the latter stages of the 3rd period, on the way to an 11-5 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse result against the University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Apr. 7) at Bayside Field.
The teams traded goals through the 1st frame (3-3), and the Hawks grabbed their first lead of the contest with 7:25 left in the 3rd. Within the next 5:21, the gap had extended to 8-3.
Jude Marzec and Chris Bova paced RWU (6-5, 2-2 CCC) with four and three goals, respectively. Jared Grier had a pair of scores during the deciding spurt, and added two assists in the game just like Peter Navarro and Tim Mullane.
The Hawks received a 14-of-18 effort in face-offs from Luke Bernasconi, who had seven ground balls that were matched by Scott Trudel. Ryan Bannon made 10 stops in goal.
For the Nor'easters (5-6, 1-2 CCC),
Mitch Mullin and
Garett Bozek supplied two goals, and
Matt Layton had the other.
Adam Race had seven ground balls and three caused turnovers;
Tyler Nevers picked up the same number off the ground to go with his 10 saves.
UNE returns home for its final non-conference match of the season on Wednesday (7 p.m.) against Emerson College.
