BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Bowdoin College clocked a total of six home runs and 15 extra-base hits to defeat the University of New England by scores of 20-1 (5 innings) and 6-2 in a softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 24) at the UNE Softball Field.

The two wins move the Polar Bears to 26-8 on the season, while the Nor'easters slip back to 17-19 overall.

All 11 Bowdoin players that stepped to the plate in GAME 1 (BOW 20-1) recorded at least one hit. Jordan Gowdy led the seven with multiple knocks, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Allison Rutz recorded a 3-for-3 effort, touching home each time and driving in five.

Both Gowdy and Rutz launched homers in the top of the 3rd, when 21 batters appeared and the visitors tallied 15 runs. The Polar Bears notched 14 of their 21 hits in the frame.

Maddie Rouhana matched Rutz in both RBI and runs scored, after she blasted a grand slam in the 4th. Kate Hoadley earned her seventh pitching victory.

UNE put its run on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning, behind one-out singles by Avery Alberghini, Meg Harvey, and Sarah Lachapelle. Those were Big Blue's only hits of the contest. Lachapelle took the loss in the circle.

The deep drives continued right at the start of GAME 2 (BOW 6-2), with Lauren O'Shea and Claire McCarthy joining the home run club for Bowdoin in the 1st stanza. Both players were the only ones with multiple hits and runs batted in for the Polar Bears in the contest, and O'Shea was the lone individual to score twice.

UNE made it 3-1 in the 1st with an unearned run, as Alexis Kapsambelis advanced a runner with a double and Lachapelle had a run-scoring groundout. That margin held until the 5th, when consecutive doubles by O'Shea, Caroline Rice, and McCarthy bumped the spread to 5-1 in favor of Bowdoin.

Rutz connected for her second home run of the day in the 7th, and the Nor'easters got one back in the last half of the inning to settle on a final margin. A lead-off double by Molly Drescher was soon followed by an RBI-single from Sam Dreissig -- her team-high second hit, after an earlier double.

Rutz fanned five from the circle for her ninth positive decision. On the other side, Drescher took the pitching setback for UNE.

Next up: The Nor'easters will prepare to entertain Gordon College for the No.5/No.8 matchup in the opening round of the 2018 CCC Softball Championship on Friday (3 p.m.) [Interactive Bracket]. UNE hosted the Fighting Scots for a pair of games just three day ago, splitting a 3-0 (UNE; Sydnee Bessler no-hitter) and 6-5 (Gordon) doubleheader.
