BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Endicott College ran its win streak to nine games with a 7-4, 8-2 doubleheader sweep of the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball action Monday afternoon (Apr. 23) at the UNE Softball Field.
The Gulls (26-4, 14-2 CCC) lock up the top seed for the upcoming league championship, while the Nor'easters (17-17, 10-8 CCC) settle on the fifth line and will host a first-round contest against Gordon College on Friday. The full field and tournament schedule will be announced on Tuesday.
Six different players had run-scoring hits for Endicott in
GAME 1 (EC 7-4), establishing the visitors with a seven-run cushion through five frames. Jamie Hopgood got things started in the 1st with the first of her two doubles, plating Lindsee Allienello. Allienello's second hit was a solo home run in the 2nd, shortly after Olivia Odermatt led-off the stanza with a homer of her own.
Three more runs came in the 3rd for the Gulls. Emily Sharpe finished with a match-high three hits, including a single that scored Hopgood. Following a double from Adrianna Favreau, Haley Arduini notched her first of two hits to knock in both Sharpe and Favreau. In the 5th, Arduini touched for a run when Kayla Sheldon singled.
Michaela Hamill picked up her 8th pitching victory for EC, keeping UNE off the board until the bottom of the 7th. The Nor'easters broke through with an RBI-single by
Andrea Gosper, scoring
Gabby Harrison after a hit, and then an RBI-double from
Caroline Schoenbucher sent Gosper around. With two outs in the inning,
Alexis Kapsambelis registered a two-RBI single to provide the final margin.
Schoenbucher's two hits were matched by
Avery Alberghini, who saw her first action following 14 games on the sideline.
Sydnee Bessler took the setback in the circle, before
Sarah Lachapelle worked five innings of relief.
Endicott built another 7-0 lead in
GAME 2 (EC 8-2), which featured a three-run blast by Odermatt in the 5th. Favreau had a two-RBI double in the 3rd -- one of her game-high three hits.
Peyton Atkins scored following both of her hits in the contest, as did Arduini and Allienello, the one time each hit safely in the EC lineup. Arduini plated Sharpe with her single in the 5th; Allienello flew out to drive in one during the 6th.
Rylie Strong got the pitching decision for the Gulls, who tallied three in the 3rd and four more in the 5th off of
Bessler.
The Nor'easters had two hits and three walks net two runs in the last half of the 5th -- both of which scored on wild pitches.
Melissa Jakubowski notched a lead-off double and scored the first one;
Kapsambelis walked and accounted for the second.
Next up: UNE is set to wrap up the regular-season on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) with a home twinbill versus Bowdoin College.
