BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Nichols College accounted for nearly half of its goals during the 2nd period and held on for a 15-13 decision against the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon (Apr. 21) at the Big Blue Turf.
Five different players scored as the Bison (11-5, 3-4 CCC) started towards halftime with a stretch that set them ahead, 8-4. The quarter tally reached seven by the break, and the lead was three (10-7).
The gap swelled to five (15-10) with 4:35 to go in the 4th session. UNE's
Alex Zadworny tried to bring his side back with three scores in a span of 2:13, but the hosts ran out of time to get any closer.
Brayden Carroll guided the visitors with four goals, and Casey Campanale chipped in with three as well as three assists. Reece O'Connor had two and two, while Brian McKinley turned in 20 saves to backstop the result.
Zadworny wound up with six goals and a couple helpers for the the Nor'easters (8-7, 3-3 CCC).
Garett Bozek recorded six points on three goals and three assists.
Matt Layton dominated the face-off battle with 20-of-26, and scooped up a game-high 12 ground balls. Between the pipes,
Tyler Nevers and
Sam MacKenzie ended at seven and eight stops, respectively.
UNE, which recognized its senior class of Layton, Nevers,
Dan Giroux,
Tyler Kukla,
Sean Larner,
Tom Luttrell,
Andrew Markham, and
Cameron Russell prior to the contest, heads right back into action on Sunday (4:30 p.m.) with a visit to Endicott College.
