GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine defeated the University of New England by scores of 9-1 (6 innings) and 2-1 in softball action Tuesday afternoon (Apr. 10) at USM Softball Stadium.
With the sweep, the Huskies move above the .500 mark to 12-11 on the year. The Nor'easters dip back to 10-8 overall.
UNE grabbed an early lead in
GAME 1 (USM 9-1), as
Avery Alberghini started the contest with a walk and later scored from third on a groundout by
Sarah Lachapelle.
However, a two-out single by Courtney Davis tied things up for USM in the bottom of the 1st inning, and an RBI-double from Kaleigh Bohan in the 2nd put the hosts ahead, 2-1.
The Huskies upped the margin to 4-1 in the 4th, before taking full control in the 5th with four more -- including three runs on a bases-clearing double by Bohan.
Davis and Bohan each had three hits, and Erin Martin's two hits both produced runs. Brittany Plowman and Brooke Cross also added two hits apiece. In addition to scoring twice, Amber Kelly struck out six to get the win in the circle.
Lachapelle,
Sam Dreissig, and
Meg Harvey recorded the hits for the Nor'easters.
Sydnee Bessler was tagged with the pitching setback in four innings of work.
The Huskies got all the scoring they would need in the 2nd frame of
GAME 2 (USM 2-1). Kelly followed a one-out double by Taylor Lux with a single, and then scored two plays later on an error.
UNE split the difference in the top of the 3rd on a run-scoring groundout by
Dreissig.
Madison Greene retired the next 10 Nor'easters until a pinch-hit single by
Sophia Monti started the 7th, but held UNE in-check from there. Greene totaled eight strikeouts against six hits to earn the victory for USM.
In her first pitching action of the season,
Molly Drescher surrendered one earned run in the loss. She limited the home team to just four hits and two walks in six innings.
Lachapelle notched a team-high two hits for the visitors.
Next up:Â UNE will have its first games in Biddeford on Wednesday, entertaining Thomas College for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
