BIDDEFORD, Maine -- After trailing by five early in the 2nd quarter, Western New England University rallied for a 12-9 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse decision against the University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 31) at the Big Blue Turf.

The Golden Bears (5-5, 2-0 CCC) started their way back following the Nor'easters' seventh tally (7-2) with 12:56 on the clock before halftime. By the intermission, things were all knotted up at 7-7, and it was 12-7 just 38 seconds into the 4th period. Western New England held UNE scoreless for more than 40 minutes as it flipped the lead.

The visitors were out-shot by a 49-28 margin, but kept the hosts off the board through seven extra-man opportunities. Sean McCusker entered the WNEU goal for the last 45 minutes to backstop the comeback with 12 saves.

Mikey Wood paced the Western New England offense with three goals. Tim Breau and Nick Gamba each had two goals and two assists, and Nicholas Beauchamp also netted a pair.

For UNE (4-5, 0-1 CCC), Garett Bozek scored three times, and his four points were matched by Alex Zadworny (2 goals, 2 assists). Collin Morrow found the back of the cage twice, with one apiece from Mitch Mullin and Sean McCarthy.

The Nor'easters received game-highs of eight ground balls and five caused turnovers from Adam Race, and Matt Layton went 13-of-23 in face-offs. Tyler Nevers totaled four stops in goal.

UNE torched two-time all-CCC goalkeeper Steven Kerr at the onset with goals on its initial four shot attempts -- in as many possessions (5:10 elapsed). Big Blue's fifth try on-target was also good (5-1) at the 6:45 mark, and the spread was 6-2 through 15 minutes of action.

The Nor'easters get back to work on Wednesday (7 p.m.) at home versus Gordon College.
