WATERVILLE, Maine -- C.J. Hassan scored with 1:45 left in double overtime to lift Colby College past the University of New England, 9-8, in men's lacrosse action Tuesday evening (Mar. 27) at Harold Alfond Stadium.
It was the fifth lead-change of the night that put the Mules (3-3) over the top of the Nor'easters (4-3). UNE had the opening possession of the stanza, with one shot hitting the crossbar and another saved. Colby then retained control for Hassan, whose deciding tally was his third goal of the contest.
Both sides had chances denied within the initial 27 seconds at the start of the first overtime period. The teams played more than 15 minutes deadlocked at 8-8.
C.J. Layton totaled 18 saves to backstop the result for the Mules, who received a pair of goals from Charlie Lynch and Riley Bergstrom. Joe Paolatto captured 13 of 22 face-offs and grabbed six ground balls.
The Nor'easters were led by three goals and two assists from
Mitch Mullin.
Alex Zadworny and
Collin Morrow contributed two goals apiece.
Tyler Nevers recorded 12 saves, and shared the team-high of six ground balls with
Adam Race.
After surrendering the first goal of the game, Colby led 2-1 at the end of the 1st quarter. UNE countered with three in-a-row during the 2nd, but the hosts began a four-goal run that carried over into the 3rd and set the Mules ahead, 6-4. The teams traded scores before the Nor'easters netted a couple to even things up (7-7) entering the 4th. The only two markers in the final frame of regulation were separated by just 50 seconds (UNE 9:18, Colby 8:28).
Big Blue returns home to face New England College on Thursday (4 p.m.).
