BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Tied at 2-all in the waning seconds of the 1st quarter, the University of New England rattled off 13 unanswered goals to come away with a 15-3 men's lacrosse victory against the University of Southern Maine on Monday evening (Mar. 12) at the Big Blue Turf.
The Nor'easters (3-1) received seven points from
Alex Zadworny, in the form of two goals and five assists.
Mitch Mullin had a team-high four goals, and his five points were matched by
Garett Bozek (2 goals, 3 assists).
Alec Beveridge and
Zach Bossi each found the back of the cage twice, while
Andrew Markham and
Sean McCarthy added one apiece.
Adam Race accounted for the remaining UNE tally, to go with his game-high six ground balls; Race and
Dan Giroux shared the match-best in caused turnovers with four.
Matt Layton won 7-of-10 face-offs for the hosts, who got eight saves out of
Tyler Nevers in just under 55 minutes of action.
Big Blue went 4-of-5 in man-up situations and finished with a 42-33 advantage in shot attempts.
For the Huskies (1-1), Nate DelGiudice and Seth Wing had one goal each and assisted when the other scored. Cruise Lizotte-Johnson went 5-for-9 in face-offs for USM, and in goal, Zach Bessette totaled 11 saves.
Southern Maine knotted the score with 0:13 on the clock in the opening period, but just 10 seconds later, Markham put the Nor'easters in front for good. By the 9:53 point in the 4th frame, the cushion was 15-2.
UNE will play Lasell College on Friday (7 p.m.) at a neutral site -- Homewood Field in Baltimore, Maryland, located on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.
