Western New England pulls away from UNE in season finale

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Western New England University had seven players reach double figures in scoring during a 111-89 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball victory over the University of New England to close out the regular-season on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 17) at the AHL Center.

The Golden Bears (11-14, 7-11 CCC) benefited from 24 points off the bench by EJ Day, and received 18 points, eight rebounds, and six assists from Zach Tavitian. Tim Reilly recorded 14 points and seven boards, while 12 points apiece came from Mike McGuire, Cole Eiber, and Alex Sikorski. Mikey Pettway notched 10 points, seven caroms, and six helpers.

WNEU shot just over 50 percent (36-of-71) from the floor in the match, and out-scored UNE by 11 (27-16) at the charity stripe. The hosts also controlled the glass to the tune of 50-38.

For the Nor'easters (12-13, 10-8 CCC), Daron Hoges, Jr. hit five treys on seven attempts for a team-high 15 points. Gavin Dibble and Jackson McCoy each had 11 points, and Matt Lorman contributed 10.

UNE will now enter the CCC Championship as the No.5 seed, heading for fourth-seeded Roger Williams University on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.). [Interactive Bracket]

A quick 5-0 start for the visitors turned for good with 13 in-a-row by Western New England. The gap was 10 (61-51) midway through, as the Golden Bears were shooting at a 57-percent clip.

The Nor'easters pushed back to within 63-61 early in the 2nd half, but a 9-0 run returned the spread to double digits.
