Strong 1st-half fuels RWU over UNE, 90-80

BRISTOL, R.I. -- Roger Williams University assembled a lead as large as 28 points during the initial 20 minutes on the way to a 90-80 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball result against the University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 1) at the Campus Rec. Center.

Austin Coene paced the Hawks (4-4, 2-0 CCC) with a double-double of 34 points and 14 rebounds. Rich Pugliese supported with 16 points and nine boards, and JJ Pfohl contributed in with 11 points.

The hosts shot 66 percent (21-for-32) from the floor in the opening period, when they used a 12-2 spurt to gain a double-digit edge (25-11) that held for 32 minutes. RWU extended the cushion with subsequent runs of 12-2 (45-24) and 10-0 (58-30) down the stretch into halftime. Meanwhile, the Nor'easters hit 34 percent (13-of-38) of their field-goal tries prior to the break and found themselves down 22.

UNE slowly chipped away at the deficit in the 2nd, limiting Roger Williams to 31 percent accuracy with 15 turnovers. Eight unanswered points inside the final minute dropped the spread to eight (88-80).

For the Nor'easters (1-6, 0-1 CCC), Avery DeBrito had 17 points and Alex Kravchuk recorded 10. Andrew Marcelino and Ryan Beatty both notched eight points.

UNE is set to entertain Wentworth Institute of Technology on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.).
