Becker tops UNE 31-17 in CCC finale

LEICESTER, Mass. – The Becker College football team defeated the University of New England 31-17 in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup at Alumni Field in Leicester, Mass. on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Nor'easters were forced to punt on their first possession of the afternoon, but a fumble by returner Elijah Hill recovered by Brady Lamontagne gave UNE a fresh set of downs in Becker territory. Brian Peters hit Haelin Roberts with a 26-yard pass to get down to the one and ran it in himself to put the Nor'easters ahead 7-0 at the 6:50 mark of the first.
 
Becker answered on its next drive as Jake McHugh passed to Edwin Velasquez for a 16-yard touchdown to tie the game. Peters and Roberts connected from 67-yards out late in the first to give UNE a 14-7 lead after one.
 
The Hawks tied the game on a nine-play, 60-yard drive capped by a two-yard rush from Michael Bianco with 9:22 left until halftime. After a three-and-out for UNE, McHugh threw a 20-yard touchdown to Marc O'Neal to take a 21-14 lead. Robert Inniss Jr. cut the deficit to 21-17 late in the half with a 20-yard field goal.
 
The Nor'easters put a long drive together to start the third, but were unable to score as Inniss's attempt from 24-yards out went wide right. Becker added a field goal to extend the lead to 24-17. UNE forced two turnovers deep in their own territory, an interception by Sean Emmert, and a fumble recovery DJ James, but were unable to put points on the board.
 
Daniel Whittenburg ran in for an eight-yard touchdown with 2:27 to play to put the game away.
 
Peters finished with 217 yards and two scores (one rushing). Haelin Roberts led the receiving corps with two catches for 93 yards and a TD. Ryan Gaboury added two receptions for 51 yards. DJ James and Keegan Stanton-Meas each had 10 tackles. Kuomar Fitzgerald and Justin Augur had sacks for UNE.
 
The Hawks ran for 291 yards, led by Bianco with 180 yard on the ground. McHugh added 181 through the air to go with two scores and a pick. Velasquez hauled in seven catches for 81 yards. Jared Zieman had seven solo tackles to lead the Becker defense.
 
UNE will close out its inaugural season on Saturday, Nov. 10 at home against Alvernia. Kickoff at UNE Blue Storm Stadium is set for 12 p.m.
