The Monks shot 56 percent (38-of-68) in the contest to overcome 29 turnovers, while the Nor'easters connected at just a 36 percent clip (33-of-92). Both sides knocked down 13 treys, however SJC did so in 25 attempts, and UNE launched 57 tries from deep.
Casale also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds for the visitors, who posted a 50-40 advantage on the glass. Four others reached double figures for Saint Joseph's (4-2), including Darian Berry with 23 points, seven boards, and five assists. Ian Mileikis totaled 12 points in support, while Nicholas Curtis went for 10 points and six helpers. Like Casale, David Keohan notched a double-double as his evening ended with 10 points and 10 caroms.
The Nor'easters (1-5) had 17 points from
Daron Hoges, Jr. and 16 out of
Alex Kravchuk.
Ryan Beatty, who shared the team-high of six rebounds with Hoges, chipped in with 13 points.
The hosts were up by six early in the match, but Casale hit a pair of triples around two UNE free throws to stake SJC with the lead for good at 21-19. The difference peaked 12 (40-28) before settling on a 54-44 spread at the break.
Two spurts each way framed the initial portion of the 2nd half. The Nor'easters came out of the intermission and immediately closed the gap to 55-53, only to see Casale dial up two from long distance and spark a 17-3 run in return (72-56). A quick eight points brought UNE within five (77-72), but seven unanswered by the Monks sent the cushion right back up to a dozen (86-74).
The margin briefly touched seven once (88-81) during the last eight minutes.
UNE will open its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) schedule on Saturday (3 p.m.) at Roger Williams University.
