Strong 1st-half lifts Polar Bears over UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Bowdoin College poured in 69 points during the initial 20 minutes on the way to a 114-94 men's basketball decision versus the University of New England on Tuesday night (Nov. 20) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Polar Bears (2-1) shot 69 percent in the opening half, which included 16-of-18 two-point attempts and 9-of-18 from long range. Bowdoin took control (24-9) with a 20-2 spurt early in the period, and extended the cushion to its peak of 35 (67-32) shortly before intermission.

David Reynolds guided the visiting side, racked up 26 points. He only missed two shots in 11 tries on the evening, and nailed six triples. Zavier Rucker was nearly as efficient en route to 23 points, and contributed eight assists. Sam Grad chipped in with 15 points and three blocks, while Hugh O'Neil turned in a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Jack Simonds secured just as many caroms, helping the Polar Bears to a 55-30 advantage on the boards.

For the game, Bowdoin connected at a 59 percent clip (40-for-68), as opposed to UNE, which hit 37 percent (31-for-85) of its looks.

The Nor'easters (1-3) were paced by 14 points and seven rebounds from Ryan Beatty. Jackson McCoy and Drake Gavin added 12 and 10 points, respectively, and three others supported with nine.

UNE will prepare to welcome in Bates College for a 7 p.m. tip on Monday.
