Leopards advance past Nor'easters, 3-0

BOSTON -- Claire Quick (CCC 2nd Team) and Leah Rogoz (CCC 1st Team) racked up a combined 27 kills as No.2 Wentworth Institute of Technology defeated No.7 University of New England, 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-18), in the opening round of the 2018 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Women's Volleyball Championship on Tuesday night (Oct. 30) at Tansey Gymnasium.

The Leopards (23-4) move on to entertain third-seeded Salve Regina University (which swept No.6 Western New England University) in Thursday's semifinal [Interactive Bracket].

The Nor'easters conclude their season with a 10-18 record.

Wentworth jumped out to a 12-3 advantage in the 1st set, and though UNE closed to within three at 14-11, the hosts posted a nine-point cushion to gain the edge in the match. The Leopards opened with a 10-0 spurt in the 2nd, but needed to secure points at 16-15 and 23-21 to hold off the Nor'easter rally. WIT went in front at 4-3 in the 3rd and slowing extended the spread to claim the result.

Both Quick and Rogoz notched double-doubles in the contest, with 15 and 10 digs, respectively. Maddy Tomastik guided the attack with 23 assists and chipped in with five service aces. Lexie Cambray (CCC 2nd Team) added 11 digs.

For UNE, Katie Flynn totaled eight kills and Rene Roggenbuck (CCC 3rd Team) had seven. Sydney Christiansen also tallied seven winners, along with a double-double of 20 assists and 10 digs. Paige Simoneau picked up a team-best 14 digs along the back line; 10 more came from both Katie Marsh (CCC 3rd Team) and Molly Camelo.
