Golden Bears upend Nor’easters

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Western New England University football team topped the University of New England, 70-13, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) game on Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.
 
Joe Curit picked off his third pass of the year deep in UNE territory midway through the opening quarter. Three plays later the Golden Bears returned the favor with an interception of their own leading to a touchdown on their next drive.
 
UNE answered right back as Brian Peters found Ryan Gaboury for a 51-yard touchdown, but a missed extra point made the score 7-6 in favor of Western New England.
 
The Golden Bears took control from there, scoring a touchdown on each of their next nine possessions to build an insurmountable 70-6 lead with 13:19 left to play.
 
Devon Charles ran in for his fourth touchdown of the season from five yards out with 6:28 remaining to make the score 70-13. He finished with a team-high 81 yards on the ground.
 
Peters threw for 137, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Connor Sirois added 61 yards through the air. Gaboury caught six passes for 105 yards, his fourth 100-plus-yard performance of the year. Keegan Stanton-Meas had seven tackles on the day.
 
Quarterback Alex Coleman paced the Golden Bears offense with six total touchdowns. He threw for 171 yards in two scores and also had a team-best 114 yards and four rushing touchdowns. Ryan Schenck finished with 106 yards and two scores on the ground.
 
UNE out-passed Western New England 202-192, but rushing was lopsided in favor of the Golden Bears 424-110.
 
The Nor'easters return home next Saturday, Oct. 27 against Salve Regina. Kickoff at UNE Blue Storm Stadium is set for 4 p.m.
