BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England received goals from four different players on the way to a 4-1 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) field hockey victory over Salve Regina University on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 20) at UNE Blue Bolt Field.
With their fourth straight league win, the Nor'easters (10-7) improve to 9-1 in CCC outings. The Seahawks, who had taken five of their previous six, drop to 8-9 overall (4-7 CCC).
The hosts got on the board in the 6th minute on a goal by
Kendra MacDonald [Watch], and doubled the cushion in the 29th when MacDonald had a shot redirected in front by
Julia Steeves.
Salve Regina split the margin (2-1) just two minutes into the 2nd half when Tori Bickel found the left corner of the net, but the visitors could not get off another shot for the rest of the contest.
UNE added some insurance in the 53rd minute, as
Reanna Boulay blasted a corner insert from
Brooke Lemerise into the left side.
Grace Grenier set the final spread in the 58th minute with her first tally of the season
[Watch].
The Nor'easters posted a 36-2 advantage in shot attempts, and finished ahead, 12-1, in penalty corners. UNE held SRU forward Ashley Cody, the nation's leader in goals (2.06/game), scoreless for just the third time all year.
Liz Sargent made one first-half stop for the home squad, which gets right back into action on Sunday (1 p.m.) versus Colby College.
Ally Daly totaled 16 saves for the Seahawks, with the support of defensive saves by Sam Levey and Kristen Wales.
