BIDDEFORD, Maine --
Colby Obrecht headed home a 40-yard free kick from
Lee Esposito with 1:45 gone in double overtime to give the University of New England men's soccer team to a 3-2 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) victory over Nichols College on Saturday (Oct. 13) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
It was the only shot of either bonus session that found the target, though both sides had near misses during the initial OT period.
The Nor'easters improve to 5-9 on the year and 2-3 in league action with the result, while the Bison (10-4-1, 2-3-1 CCC) fall for the first time in five outings. UNE, which honored its Class of 2019 prior to the contest, has now captured a Senior Day win in five straight seasons.
Nichols grabbed an early edge in the 4th minute as Evan Lemoine slid a pass through the crease for an easy finish by Jonathan Ingram. The hosts pulled even in the 14th minute, as a diving save on a shot by Obrecht left a juicy rebound for
Flynn Willsea to get on the board.
Obrecht tallied another assist, along with
Dan Good, when Willsea buried his second marker in the 54th minute. However, the Bison bounced back in the 59th minute (2-2), as Gregory Giglio let a left-footed rocket fly from 35 yards off a pass from Ali Ali.
Nathan Delesdernier backstopped the triumph for the Nor'easters with nine saves, while his counterpart from the Bison, Patrick Porpora, totaled six stops.
UNE heads to face conference-leading Endicott College on Wednesday (7 p.m.).
