Hawks rally to top UNE, 62-54

BRISTOL, R.I. -- Roger Williams University overcame a 16-point deficit from the 2nd quarter in a 62-54 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball decision against the University of New England on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 27) at the Campus Recreation Center.

The Hawks (16-3) take over first-place in the league standings at 10-2, while the Nor'easters (13-5) slip back to 9-2 in the CCC.

UNE's lead peaked at 34-18, and the visitors held a 36-23 advantage at the half, while holding the hosts to 22.6 percent shooting (7-of-31).

The spread was still in double digits until RWU closed the 3rd quarter on a 12-3 run to get within two (45-43). The Hawks shot 8-for-17 in the period, with eight points from Gabby Jerahian.

Anna Walther hit a three-pointer on start the 4th and give Roger Williams its first lead of the day. The momentum that ended the 3rd frame carried into the final stanza, as the stretch extended to 23-5 and left the home team up seven (54-47) with under five minutes to go.

The Hawks made 12-of-14 free throws down the stretch to finish with a 10-point edge at the charity stripe (22-12). UNE only dropped in 12-of-21 in the contest.

Mariah Nicholas led RWU with 18 points, six rebounds, and five blocks. Walther had 11 of her 14 points following the midway break, and Jerahian totaled 13. Teagan Dunn collected 12 boards, helping her side to a 47-41 margin on the glass.

Sam MacDonald and Olivia Shaw both scored 18 for the Nor'easters, and combined for 15 rebounds; 16 of Shaw's points came during the initial 20 minutes. Ashley Coneys registered 12 points and 10 caroms.

UNE returns home to face Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).
