BRISTOL, R.I. -- Austin Coene led five players in double figures with 22 points as Roger Williams University defeated the University of New England, 90-83, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 27) at the Campus Recreation Center.
Coene also picked up seven rebounds and seven steals for the Hawks (13-6, 7-5 CCC), while Nick Marini contributed a 19-point, nine-rebound, five-assist performance. Both Jaylen Jennings and Rich Pugliese added 16 points, and JJ Pfohl secured a double-double of 12 points and 10 caroms.
Roger Williams out-scored the Nor'easters by 14 inside, and by 20 points (26-6) at the free throw line.
UNE's advantage was from behind the arc, where the visitors knocked down nine additional shots compared to the opponent (15-6).
Daron Hoges, Jr. matched a career-high with 24 points, which came largely from 6-of-9 accuracy from deep. He also reached double-double status with another game-high of 11 rebounds.
Drew Muniz had the next highest scoring output with nine.
The difference during the 1st half ranged between five in favor of the Nor'easters (13-8) and nine towards the Hawks (34-25) before settling at 44-42 on the RWU side. UNE gained the edge for a few possessions in the 2nd, but a 10-0 spurt by Roger Williams produced the final lead-change at the 15:31 mark.
UNE reduced an 11-point gap to 69-66, however it was no less than a seven-point margin inside the last five minutes.
The Nor'easters get back to work on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) at home against Eastern Nazarene College.
