STANDISH, Maine -- Saint Joseph's College of Maine defeated the University of New England by a 74-53 tally in women's basketball action Monday evening (Jan. 22) at the Harold Alfond Center.
The Monks are currently on a 15-game unbeaten streak and stand at 16-1 on the year, while the Nor'easters slip back to 12-4 overall.
SJC was guided by 18 points from both Julia Champagne and Emily Benway; Champagne made her night a double-double with 10 rebounds, while Benway connected for all but one (9-of-10) of her shots in the contest. Kelsi McNamara added 14 points and six assists.
Saint Joseph's drained 55 percent of its field-goal attempts (28-of-51), which included going 20-for-29 from inside the arc. Conversely, UNE shot it at a 31-percent clip (18-of-58). The home team also collected a 37-27 edge on the glass.
For the Nor'easters,
Laura Holman had 15 points and six caroms.
Ashley Coneys and
Elyssa Nicholas contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The Monks led from the opening tip, and the cushion reached double digits for good (29-17) midway through the 2nd quarter.
UNE will resume its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) slate on Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) at Gordon College.
