BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England men's basketball squad defeated Western New England University by a 102-86 spread in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Saturday afternoon (Jan. 13) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
Leading the winning effort for the Nor'easters (5-9, 3-4 CCC) was
Alex Kravchuk with 15 points and four steals. It was a season-high in scoring for Kravchuk -- the second time in as many games -- and included a 60-foot, buzzer-beating swish to end the 1st half.
Ryan Matthews,
Gavin Dibble, and
Jackson McCoy went for 14, 13, and 12 points, respectively.
Matt Lorman contributed 10 points, and
Drew Muniz eight.
Daron Hoges, Jr. posted seven points to go with a career-best 12 rebounds, which paced a 54-38 rebounding advantage.
The final margin had everything to do with Big Blue's performance from three-point land -- the hosts hit 18-of-53 from long range, while the Golden Bears made just 5-for-21.
For Western New England (6-7, 3-4 CCC), Zach Tavitian registered a double-double with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks. Mikey Pettway had 14 points and dished out eight assists. Alex Sikorski notched 15 points and EJ Day chipped in with 13 more.
The Nor'easters held a 19-11 lead before an 11-0 stretch by the visitors flipped things. The Golden Bears maintained the edge for six minutes, although only by as many as three, until a 6-0 spurt put UNE on top for good (37-34) with 5:48 left in the 1st.
Coming out of the midway break with a 52-44 cushion, the Nor'easters connected on four straight triples to grab a 64-48 margin. But another 11-0 run from WNEUÂ reduced the gap back into single digits. Things closed to within three (76-73) before a 13-1 span by UNE restored a comfortable advantage.
The Nor'easters will look for back-to-back wins on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) at Curry College.
