BIDDEFORD, Maine – A pair of goals in the opening period were enough for Bowdoin College to complete a 2-0 victory over the University of New England in a men's soccer match Thursday evening (Sept. 7) at Barbara J. Hazard Field.
The Polar Bears (1-0) controlled play from the start, and finished with sizable cushions in shots (26-2) and corners (22-0) along the way.
After having a 2nd-minute penalty kick denied, Bowdoin got on the board in the 6th minute as Levi Morant buried the shot in the lower right corner of the cage, with assists going to Jason Oliver and Wilson MacMillan.
Will Herman extended the lead in the 31st minute, capitalizing off a free kick from the right side. Matty McColl served the ball into the traffic in the box, and Herman tipped it in the far side of the net.
The Nor'easters (0-3) did not have a shot until the 2nd half. Stevie Van Siclen turned aside both tries he faced to notch the shutout for the Polar Bears.
Including the diving penalty-kick save early on,
Will Shearon totaled seven stops for UNE, which returns to action on Saturday (1 p.m.) at Thomas College.
