UNE powers past Rivier in straight sets

Statistics

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Rene Roggenbuck dialed up a season-high 13 kills to pace the University of New England in a 3-0 women's volleyball victory (25-16, 25-21, 25-23) over Rivier University on Thursday evening (Sep. 28) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Roggenbuck reached her number while hitting at a .500 clip, and added three solo blocks. The Nor'easters (4-10) received 10 kills, nine digs, and three service aces from Bekah Mather, and Molly Camelo went for eight winners and 12 digs. Kristen Falcinelli and Sydney Christiansen were all over the court to register double-doubles of assists and digs, as Falcinelli totaled 20 and 10, and Christiansen notched 14 and 14. The defensive effort was led by Katie Marsh at 15 digs.

The Raiders (10-6) got nine kills out of Alex Trevains, and Hayley Macken put up 20 assists. Bethany Trevino picked up a match-best 22 digs.

Roggenbuck, Mather, and Camelo were firing on all cylinders at the start, racking up nearly half of their combined kills amount (15) in the 1st set and attacking with a .462 efficiency. UNE trailed by one at 7-6 before rattling off a 9-1 run to gain the lead for good.

Rivier began better in the 2nd frame, and held an 10-8 edge until an 11-3 spurt by the Nor'easters established the hosts with enough control of the scoreboard.

It looked to be more of the same in the 3rd, as the Raiders jumped out with the initial five points and then UNE tallied 11 of the next 13 to move in front (11-7). But Rivier kept it close, and eventually four consecutive points resulted in a 22-20 cushion for the visitors. However, four errors from the Raiders, sandwiching a kill by Camelo, tipped things in favor of the Nor'easters.

UNE heads for the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth on Saturday for a tri-match with the Corsairs (4 p.m.) and Framingham State University (2 p.m.).
