Anderson vaults Southern Maine over UNE

Statistics

GORHAM, Maine – Sam Anderson netted a pair of goals in the waning minutes to propel the University of Southern Maine past the University of New England, 4-2, in a non-conference men's soccer match Monday afternoon (Sept. 18) at Hannaford Field.

The Huskies snap a three-game skid with the win, improving their record to 3-3. The Nor'easters fall to 1-6 on the campaign.

After a stretch where UNE held much of the momentum, things shifted in favor of the hosts with the awarding of a penalty kick in the 85th minute. Anderson found the top left corner then, and added an insurance goal four minutes later, to give Southern Maine the result.

A misplayed defensive header by USM put the visitors on the board in the 9th minute, but less than 30 seconds later, the Huskies got a goal of their own as Riley Dinsmore-Patch tied the game.

USM took the lead in the 29th minute, when Benjamin Musese headed in a corner kick service. That 2-1 margin lasted until the 75th minute before UNE's Dexter Doucet sent the equalizer into the bottom left corner of the cage.

Richard Glemawu made seven saves to get the decision for the Huskies.

For the Nor'easters, who return home on Wednesday (7 p.m.) to play Colby College, Tom Benoit recorded three stops.
