Mariners claim 4th and 5th sets to edge UNE in opener

GORHAM, Maine -- Trailing by a set, Maine Maritime Academy rallied with a 25-18 decision in the 4th frame and took the 5th by a 15-11 margin to defeat the University of New England, 3-2, in a women's volleyball match played Friday night at Hill Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Southern Maine. The earlier sets were decided by scores of 25-22 (UNE), 25-18 (MMA), and 25-13 (UNE).

Guiding the Mariners (1-0) were Alexa Cacacie and Jessica D'Auria with 15 and 10 kills, respectively. Cacacie led all players with 18 points. Sydney Adams helped with 32 assists and 11 digs, while Maria Perez dropped in five service aces to go with her 20 digs.

For the Nor'easters (0-1), Paige Simoneau shared the match-high of 15 kills and Rene Roggenbuck put down five winners in addition to five blocks. Kristen Falcinelli and Katie Marsh both scooped up 10 digs; Falcinelli made her night a double-double with 16 assists and had a team-best three aces.

UNE returns to the same court on Saturday for contests with Saint Joseph's College of Maine (2 p.m.) and the host Huskies (4 p.m.).
