BIDDEFORD, Maine -- University of New England head football coach
Mike Lichten today (May 2) announced the Nor'easters' Class of 2017 recruiting class. UNE will commence competition this upcoming September, with a slate of nine games versus sub-varsity competition.
The class features a total of 58 student-athletes (to date), with 13 from Maine and a total of 11 different states being represented, including all six New England states. The Nor'easters' recruiting class includes prospects from as far away as California and Washington state.
"I am thrilled about the academic strength and athletic ability of our 2017 class," Lichten said. "This group features size, speed, toughness, energy and love for football, but most of all, this group possesses a high level of character."
"Along with 14 current students on campus, this group will form the foundation of our football program and set a standard of expectations academically, athletically and socially," continued Lichten.
The Class of 2017 recruiting class members will be comprised of students who will major in applied exercise science; health, wellness and occupational studies; nursing; business; political science; environmental science; communications; history; athletic training and pre-med among other concentrations.
The Nor'easters are scheduled to open camp August 10.Â
"We are very excited about UNE football's historic recruiting class," commented defensive coordinator
Kenny Treschitta. "This is a talented, high-character group that will make an impact in all three phases of the game."
Assistant coach
Pete Byron added: "we pride ourselves in a desire to provide our players with the best Division III collegiate football experience in New England, and a big part of that experience is playing with teammates from different backgrounds."
Lichten summed up the Nor'easters' recruitment efforts by saying, "through a lot of hard work, long days of travel, working camps, visiting high schools and watching games, I am excited about bringing these young men to campus as student-athletes that will represent and contribute to everything special already going on at UNE."
