DUDLEY, Mass. -- Alexis Ferris surrendered eight hits and fanned 15 to lead Nichols College in a doubleheader sweep (7-0, 6-1) of the University of New England as the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball slate continued Sunday afternoon (Apr. 9) at the NC Softball Field.
The Bison end their five-game skid to improve to 9-9 on the year, 3-5 in CCC action. The Nor'easters slip back to 8-8 overall and 4-4 in league contests.
Both performances were nearly identical for Ferris -- eight strikeouts, four hits, and two walks in the opener, before seven strikeouts, four hits, and one walk in game two. Additionally, the lone run for the visitors was unearned.
Only eight of the 13 NC runs were earned against UNE pitching, and four went without a credited RBI.
Melissa Jakubowski tossed 3.1 innings with four earned in the game one defeat;
Sydnee Bessler was charged with one run in 5.0 frames of the closing match. Big Blue's starters punched out four and three, respectively.
Kendall Meehan recorded two hits in both outings for Nichols, drove in one during each, and scored a pair in the the second. Christina Barrows also totaled four hits on the day -- 3-for-3 in the second -- while touching home four times. Jessica Kuelling and Zoe Chevrette had a hit in each; Kuelling plated two in the second.
Lauren Gerhard has two hits in game two for the Nor'easters.
Sydney Helmbrecht and
Samantha Dreissig hit safely in both games, and
Caroline Schoenbucher accounted for the run.
UNE gets back to work on Wednesday (3 p.m.) with its home opener at Bill Doran Field in Biddeford against Wentworth Institute of Technology (0-8 CCC).
