Alex Zadworny and
Dan Auger combined for 16 points to lead the University of New England to a 22-8 Commonwealth Coast Conference men's lacrosse victory over Curry College in the regular-season finale Tuesday night (Apr. 25) at Walter Katz Field.
The Nor'easters (13-4, 6-2 CCC) will take a program-best seven-game win streak into their Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship opening-round match Saturday. Curry concludes its regular season with an overall record of 9-8, 3-5 in conference matches.
Zadworny matched his career high with six goals and now has a total of 14 in his last three matches. Auger contributed four goals and six assists to tie his own school single-game record for points and push his school single-season record to 86. UNE had three other players with a multiple-goal night, including
Mitch Mullin with three and
Philip Young and
Tom Luttrell with two apiece.
Devin Newell and Andrew DeLeary combined for five goals to lead the Colonels.
UNE led from the outset, racing out to a 13-1 bulge before halftime. Zadworny tallied all six of his markers in the initial 27:26 of the match.
The Nor'easters dominated all of the statistical categories, leading in shots (47-37), ground balls (46-40) and face-offs wins (20-12). Winning goalkeeper
David Pearson had 12 saves, while Mullin scooped up a career-high seven ground balls.
Matthew Layton won 11 of 17 face-offs and came up with five ground balls.
Goalkeepers Shane O'Brien and Josh Teller combined for 10 stops for Curry.
UNE, the third seed for the upcoming CCC Championship, will host sixth-seeded Nichols College at noon on Saturday. The Nor'easters claimed an 18-10 win over the Bison in the only regular-season meeting between the two teams.
