Senior Day Ceremony
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England Nor'easters opened the final quarter with four consecutive goals to break open a tie game on their way to a 10-7 Commonwealth Coast Conference men's lacrosse win over Roger Williams University Saturday (Apr. 22) on Senior Day at the Big Blue Turf.
The win was the first-ever for the Nor'easters (12-4, 5-2 CCC) over Roger Williams (8-7, 4-3) in the 18 meetings between the two squads. UNE has now won its last six matches, the longest streak in school history.
Tom Luttrell and
Andrew Curro each scored three times to lead the UNE attack.
Alex Zadworny netted a pair of goals, and
Collin Morrow and
J.T. Oliver had one apiece.
AJ Core tallied a game-high four goals to lead the Hawks. Jude Marzec finished with a pair of markers, while Eddie Hill contributed one.
With the score tied 6-6 heading into the final frame, UNE took the lead for good on Curro's third tally of the day, which came with less than two minutes elapsed. Zadworny and Morrow would score four and six minutes later, respectively, before Luttrell capped the Nor'easters' spurt at the 2:51 mark. Hill scored with 1:49 remaining to get Hawks to within three (10-7), but UNE's defense held strong the rest of the way.
UNE never trailed in the match after scoring the initial two goals of the game. The Hawks were able to tie the match on three occasions but never able to jump in front.
Matthew Layton and
Andrew Markham each had six ground balls to lead UNE in that category.
Adam Race picked up five to go with three caused turnovers. Winning goalkeeper had a strong day between the pipes, totaling 12 stops.
Weston Nolan made 14 saves for the Hawks, who received six ground balls pickups from Harrison Levesque.
Both teams will conclude their regular seasons Tuesday when UNE plays at Curry College and Roger Williams hosts Wentworth Institute of Technology.
