UNE races out to huge lead early, cruises to 23-6 CCC win over Gordon

WENHAM, Mass. -- The University of New England Nor'easters opened up an 8-1 lead just 10 minutes into the match on their way to a 23-6 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's lacrosse win over Gordon College Wednesday night (Apr. 19) at the Brigham Athletic Complex.

Winners of four consecutive games, UNE (11-4, 4-2 CCC) registered a 23-goal performance for the second consecutive outing while tallying 20 or more goals for the third time this season. Gordon fell to 5-8 overall, 1-5 in conference matches. 

UNE received a game-high six goals from Alex Zadworny, while Philip Young had a career night, tallying four. Dan Auger had four goals and four assists to total eight points, and Tom Luttrell contributed three scores. Six other players each registered one goal for the Nor'easters, who out-shot Gordon by a wide margin (60-27).

Nico Manganiello and Nick Palandjian both had a pair of goals for Gordon.

The Nor'easters dominated nearly every facet of the game, piling up decided advantages in ground balls (62-30) and face-offs won (24-9). They were also successful on 13 of 16 clear attempts.

Matthew Layton was one of the catalysts of the UNE attack, going 14-for-18 on the draw and winning eight ground balls. Connor Leggett (6 ground balls) was a perfect 6-for-6 at the face-off dot, and Adam Race picked up seven ground balls.

David Pearson earned his 11th win of the season in goal for the Nor'easters, denying 12 shots in nearly 54 minutes of playing time.

UNE will face Roger Williams University in a crucial CCC matchup Saturday at the Big Blue Turf. Start time is slated for 1 p.m.
