UNE builds big lead early; cruises to 20-9 win over Plymouth State

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 15-1 lead early in the third quarter on its way to a 20-9 non-conference victory over Plymouth State University in a non-conference match played in frigid conditions Sunday afternoon (Mar. 5) at the Big Blue Turf.

The win keeps the Nor'easters' early-season record unblemished at 3-0, while the Panthers drop to 0-1.

For UNE, Andrew Curro led all players with four goals, while Dan Auger, Mitch Mullin and Garett Bozek had three apiece. Philip Young, J.T. Oliver and Jason Erwin each scored twice, and Alex Zadworny rounded out the Nor'easters' scoring with a goal.

Mac Tetreault paced Plymouth State by scoring three goals, and Colin Claflin notched a pair.

The Nor'easters led 4-1 after one quarter and scored all six goals of the second to establish a 10-1 advantage heading into intermission. They would outscore the Panthers 10-8 after halftime for the final margin of 11 goals.

Starting goalkeeper David Pearson made 10 saves in 55:48 of action to earn the win. Sean Conger (SR/Holden, Mass.) won 8 of 14 face-offs to aid the attack. Auger added three assists to his three-goal performance to record a six-point afternoon.

Long-stick midfielder Adam Haversat had a strong game for Plymouth State, racking up eight ground balls and four caused turnovers. Kyle Stockman won 15 of 25 draws. Goalkeepers Jayson LaRiviere and Charlie Harrington each played a half and totaled nine stops.

UNE returns to action Tuesday with a 7 p.m. home match versus Colby College. The Panthers take on Lasell College Wednesday in a 3:30 p.m. road game.
