NORTON, Mass. --
Alex Zadworny scored with 1:17 elapsed in overtime to give the University of New England a thrilling 14-13 victory over Wheaton College in a mutual season-opening men's lacrosse match Saturday afternoon (Feb. 25) at Nordin Field.
Mitch Mullin scored four times to pace the Nor'easters (1-0). Zadworny had three goals, while
Dan Auger and
Tom Luttrell each tallied twice.
Andrew Curro,
Adam Race and
Collin Morrow rounded out the scoring for UNE. Auger handed out five assists to end the day with seven points.
Wheaton received four goals from Matt Morgan, and Scott Whear added three.
Trailing 6-1, Wheaton chipped away at its deficit and eventually tied the match with a pair of goals in the final minute to force overtime. Zadworny's game-winner came in a man-up situation for the Nor'easters.
David Pearson had 13 saves to earn the win in goal for UNE. Race added a team-best five ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Nor'easters, who were 5-for-7 in man-up opportunities.
UNE will open its home schedule Wednesday (March 1) with a 4 p.m. home game versus Saint Joseph's College of Maine.
