BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Six players scored in double figures as Colby College eased past the University of New England men's basketball team, 124-97, in the championship game of the Hampton Inn Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 18) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
The Mules (2-0) were led by the tournament-MVP performance of Dean Weiner, who dialed up 17 points, 18 rebounds, eight assists, and seven blocks in the event final. Over the two days, he filled the stat sheets with averages of 13.5 points, 14.5 rebounds, 5.5 steals, 4.0 assists, and 2.5 steals, while shooting 65 percent from the field.
Colby's scoring line was topped by Sam Jefferson with 22, and Wallace Tucker went for 18 points along with six assists. Pat Dickert totaled 17 points, Matt Hanna contributed 11 points and four steals, and Steven Daley added 10 points. Hanna was also named to the all-tournament team.
The visiting squad made 62 percent (49-for-79) of its shot attempts in the contest, and recorded 80 points from the paint. Additionally, the Mules controlled the glass by a 57-37 margin.
For UNE (1-2),
Gavin Dibble matched the game-high of 22 points, which included 12-of-14 at the free throw line.
Drew Muniz and
Jordan Bagshaw both canned four treys and ended with 14 and 12 points, respectively. Dibble and
Daron Hoges, Jr. represented the Nor'easters on the all-tournament team.
Colby finished the 1st half on a 28-12 run that turned a two-point duel into a 62-44 cushion. The gap following halftime was as narrow as 14 (76-62) with 15:20 left to play, after Bagshaw hit back-to-back triples.
Earlier in the day, Colby-Sawyer College rallied from a nine-point first-half deficit to edge St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) in the consolation game, 66-62. Patrick Coffey (CSC) and Stephane Etheart (SJCB) rounded out the all-tournament team honorees.
UNE will visit Bowdoin College on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.).
