BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Olivia Shaw posted a double-double of 23 points and 13 rebounds to lead the University of New England women's basketball team to a 75-63 victory over the University of Southern Maine in the mutual season-opener Wednesday evening (Nov. 15) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

The Nor'easters (1-0) withstood a 21-9 run by the Huskies (0-1) in the late 3rd/early 4th, as a 17-point cushion was narrowed to 61-56 with 4:35 remaining, but the hosts buried back-to-back three-pointers to slow the momentum swing.

Even after missing her last three shots, Shaw still finished the night going 11-for-16 from the field, and added four blocks to her game-best point-total and career-high in caroms. Ashley Coneys contributed 15 points and seven boards, while Sam MacDonald went for 11 points and seven caroms. Elyssa Nicholas dropped in 13 points off the bench, and Kristie McNall ended with eight. Coneys (8), MacDonald (7), and McNall (6) accounted for 21 of the squad's 23 points in the high-scoring 4th.

For Southern Maine, Alexa Srolovitz fueled the comeback bid with 11 points in the final period, closing the match with 18 to go with nine rebounds and seven assists. Emily Nicholson and Jackie Luckhardt registered 12 and 11 points, respectively. Miranda Nicely corralled a game-high 14 rebounds, helping her side to a 52-47 edge on the glass.

It was the fifth straight win for the Nor'easters, and eighth in the last nine meetings with the Huskies.

UNE will get right back to work on Friday (8 p.m.) and Saturday at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Plattsburgh State University. The Nor'easters are slated to begin their New York trip with a date against Clarkson University.
