BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England captured the initial two sets, but needed to secure consecutive points at 13-all in the 5th to pull out a 3-2 women's volleyball victory (25-12, 25-20, 19-25, 22-25, 15-13) over Eastern Nazarene College in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match Tuesday night (Oct. 10) at the Harold Alfond Forum.
Winners of six in their last eight, the Nor'easters improve to 9-11 overall and 3-2 in CCC outings. The Lions fall for the fifth straight contest, back to 9-14 (1-4 CCC).
Four players on the home team reached double figures in kills, topped by
Bekah Mather and
Molly Camelo with 14.
Rene Roggenbuck added 11 kills and shared in four blocks.
Sydney Christiansen recorded a triple-double of 10 kills, 26 assists, and 13 digs.
Kristen Falcinelli contributed 24 assists, and
Paige Simoneau dropped in six aces. Defensively,
Kacie Flahive totaled 16 digs and Camelo chipped in with 13 more.
For Eastern Nazarene, Courtney McCarthy racked up 16 kills and Kayla Dean put up 31 assists. Jenna Meacham went for eight kills, seven blocks (1 solo), and 13 digs. McKenzie Walling also had 13 digs to go with four service winners.
UNE logged a 10-2 run to reverse a one-point deficit (6-5) in the 1st and gain control, and then put down the last six to ease into an early advantage. Things were tight in the 2nd until five in-a-row by the Nor'easters established the lead for good.
Spans of 5-0 and 9-3 helped the Lions claim the 3rd, and ENC never trailed in the 4th, although its 19-12 cushion was reduced to two (22-20, 24-22) before the match leveled off and headed to a deciding frame.
In the 5th, UNE raced out to a 6-0 edge, and maintained an 11-6 lead only to then have four errors contribute to Eastern Nazarene rallying for a 13-all tie. A kill from Christiansen and ace by Simoneau closed out the result.
UNE is off until October 18 (7 p.m.) when Endicott College comes to the Forum.
