Nor'easters pick up impressive road win in front of huge crowd at Utica

UTICA, N.Y. -- The University of New England Nor'easters took advantage of 22 Utica College penalties to score five power-play goals on their way to a 7-3 non-conference victory Friday night (Jan. 13) before a raucous crowd of 3,172 at Utica Memorial Auditorium.

The victory was the second in a row for the Nor'easters, who improved to 7-5-1. The Pioneers slipped to 10-6-0. The crowd of 3,172 was the largest the Nor'easters have ever played in front of in program history.

Ryan Bloom and Danny Antonoff each scored a pair of goals for UNE, while Trevor Fleurent, Tucker Ross and Brady Fleurent added one apiece. Brady Fleurent handed out three assists to finish with four points and run his season assist total to 20, tying Zach Lokey for the school single-season mark.

UNE established a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Trevor Fleurent and Ross before pushing it to a 3-0 margin on Antonoff's first goal of the evening at 2:38 of the second. The Pioneers got into the scoring column on a marker by Riley Eagan less than a minute later, but Bloom got UNE's lead back to three (4-1) at the 5:48 mark. Anthony McVeigh and Connor Schmidt would notch consecutive goals to cut the hosts' deficit to one (4-3) before the second intermission.

The Nor'easters scored three power-play goals (Brady Fleurent, Antonoff and Bloom) in the final frame as Utica hurt its own chances to rally for the win by committing 14 penalties totaling 74 minutes. Among the Pioneers' 14 infractions were two game disqualifications and four 10-minute misconduct penalties.

For the game the Nor'easters led 36-24 in shots.

Tate Sproxton had 21 saves in goal for UNE, which plays No. 9 Hobart tomorrow at 4 p.m.
