UNE uses strong second half to move past Monks

Box Score

STANDISH, Maine -- Nick Paine and Dexter Doucet scored less than seven minutes apart during the middle portion of the second half to give the University of New England men's soccer team a 2-0 win over St. Joseph's College of Maine in a non-conference match Sunday (Sept. 4) at Westerlea Way Field.

The win was the first for the Nor'easters (1-0-1) on the young season, while St. Joe's dropped back to 0-1-1. UNE improved to 9-3-2 in the all-time series between the two squads.

UNE notched the game-winner off a set piece in the 62nd minute. Rookie Sam Farr took the free kick and found Paine, who one-timed the feed into the right side of the goal.

The Nor'easters would double their lead in the 69th minute when Doucet broke free in the top right of the box and deposited a laser into the opposite side of the frame.

Elijah Leverett had five saves to record his second shutout and extend his streak of being unscored upon to 200 minutes. Blake Mullen had one stop for the Monks, who led 18-5 in shots and 9-0 in corner kicks.

UNE returns to play Wednesday (Sept. 7) with a road match at Bowdoin College. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.
